Do You Have To Know How To Swim To Snorkel?

For your safety, we require patrons to be decent swimmers at Silent World because of our deep ocean sites. For non-swimmers, we’d suggest snorkeling at shallow locations with the right preparation and flotation devices. With caution and research, you can still enjoy snorkeling without being an expert. So strap in, relax, and enjoy the snorkeling adventure that is right for you!

Snorkeling Non-Swimmer Tips

The best way to prepare for snorkeling is to take beginner swimming lessons. Improving your swimming abilities will let you become a much more confident and capable snorkeler. Learning to float, kick correctly, and control your breathing in the water will help you feel more relaxed in the ocean. With these skills, you can learn and improve your swimming abilities to get ready for snorkeling!

Pick the Right Destination

If you aren’t interested in becoming a capable swimmer, there are still places you can go! Just remember to do your research if you are snorkeling as a non-swimmer. Make sure to find a spot with calm waves, shallow water, and no underwater hazards. Strong currents, waves, or dangerous marine animals could potentially cheapen your underwater experience. Of course, also be on the lookout for places with awesome sites full of colorful fish and coral to get the most out of your experience!

Never Swim Alone

Remember that safety is priority number 1. Even strong swimmers should never swim alone. Bring an experienced friend with you, or go with a group under the supervision of a trained instructor!

Go With a Guide

For your protection, it is important to always snorkel with a guide. Stick to small-group excursions where you will always be in the line of sight of a professional. This will help you stay safe and maximize relaxation and enjoyment!

Bring the Right Gear

Bringing the right equipment is one of the best things you can do to prepare for your snorkeling adventure! Make sure to try out your snorkels, snorkel vests, and fins beforehand so that you are ready to go when vacation day comes. You will feel much more confident if you’ve tested that everything fits well.

Don’t Panic, Just Relax

If it’s been a while since you’ve been snorkeling, don’t worry! It is normal to fear the water at first. As long as you have the capabilities of a decent swimmer, there is nothing to panic about. The best thing to do is relax. Remember to take deep, steady breaths, swim slowly, and remember that your flotation devices are keeping you safe as you lower more into the water. Simply enjoy the experience and stay calm, this will help you have better control over your movement, and it’ll be easier for you to float.

Try Snorkeling In Key Largo!

Key Largo has some of the most incredible deep water sites, so it is important to be a decent swimmer for your safety. This would be defined as someone who can swim without assistance for an extended amount of time. If that fits your abilities then sign up with Silent World today! We are run by 5-star PADI-trained instructors and staff with decades of experience to ensure your safety and enjoyment out in the water. We offer only small-group excursions to provide the best assistance and care to our patrons. What Kind of Wetsuit Will I Need to Scuba Dive in Key Largo

Key Largo is a beautiful destination known for its crystal-clear waters, diverse marine life, and stunning coral reefs. The island is a popular spot for scuba diving, and if you’re planning a scuba diving trip to Key Largo, one of the most important things to consider is what kind of wetsuit you should wear. In this blog post, we’ll review the weather conditions in Key Largo, the types of wetsuits available, and other items to bring for your scuba diving trip.

Weather in Key Largo

Key Largo is located in the Florida Keys and experiences warm and sunny weather throughout the year. The average temperature in Key Largo ranges from 72°F to 87°F, with the warmest months being July and August. However, the water temperature can vary depending on the time of year you visit. During the winter months, the water temperature can drop to around 70°F, while in the summer months, it can rise to around 85°F. Choosing the right wetsuit for the water temperature is essential to ensure your safety and comfort while scuba diving.

What Kind of Wetsuit Do I Need?

When choosing a wetsuit for scuba diving in Key Largo, there are several factors to consider. The most important factor is the water temperature, which will determine the thickness of the wetsuit you need. The thicker the wetsuit, the more insulation it provides, which is essential for staying warm in colder water temperatures.

It’s important to remember that water pulls heat away from the body twenty five times faster than air! 70 degrees might sound nice for a sunny afternoon in the park, but you WILL need a wetsuit if you’re going to be submerged in 70 degree water for an extended period.

Recommended wetsuit thickness for temperature:

  • 80°F or above: 1-2mm, This type of wetsuit is also known as a shorty and is ideal for warm water diving.
  • Between 70-80°F: 3mm
  • Between 60-70°F: 5mm
  • Below 60°F: 5mm

Given Key Largo’s 70-85 degree water temperature, you’ll likely want a 3 or a 5 mm wetsuit, depending on the season. Check ahead for your planned vacation week’s expected water temperature and plan accordingly.

Apart from the thickness of the wetsuit, other factors to consider when choosing a wetsuit include the material, size, and style. Wetsuits come in different materials, including neoprene and Lycra, and choosing the right material will depend on your personal preference and the water temperature. It’s also essential to choose a wetsuit that fits well and is comfortable to wear for long periods.

Other Items to Bring Scuba Diving

Apart from a wetsuit, you should bring other essential items when scuba diving in Key Largo. These include:

  • Dive computer: A dive computer is an essential piece of equipment that helps you monitor your dive time and depth, ensuring you stay within safe limits.
  • Regulator: A regulator is a device that delivers air from the scuba tank to the diver. It’s essential to choose a regulator that is reliable and easy to use.
  • Mask and fins: A well-fitting mask and fins are crucial for comfortable and efficient diving.
  • Dive light: A dive light is essential for exploring underwater caves, wrecks, and other dark areas.
  • Sunscreen: Even though you’ll be underwater, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is crucial.

However, if you plan to go Scuba Diving with Silent World in Key Largo, this equipment will be provided as a rental to you as part of the cost of the trip, besides the sunscreen.
